This book superficially hits the right notes but it lacks a lot of soul Poizner's writing just doesn't convey what he's trying to communicate about what he learned from his experience and how it shaped him I can't uite put my finger on it but where the heart of this book should be there's nothing

When Steve Poizner decided to teach in a high school in an underprivileged area he was obviously learning as he went along For me the point is that he did get one semester of actual experience as a teacher under his belt before he went into politics It would be great if politicians got a look at the reality many people are dealing with I found it astounding that he initially spent a day talking about vc with the assumption that these chi

There are better books about working with teens Poizner is undoubtedly a talented person and he shares many of his insider leadership stories in this book that s it s chief selling point However it feels like a superficial treatment of his time teaching in a poor school in San Jose while the chronology is there the heart is not He may have come to a deeper open place in his heart from being in contact with others who did not share his very privileged background and good luck but if so he does not divulge this change to the readerTry comparing this book with Mark Salzman s True Notebooks his discovery of what lies behind the gates of LA s Central Juvenile Hall as he reluctantly teaches writing to juvenile offenders With a self critiuing eye Salzman bares his initial prejudice against his classmates and shows how he came to understand and like several of them

He one when a student's boyfriend was arrested for bank robbery his managerial and entrepreneurial skills seemed irrelevant But on others they helped him demonstrate how exciting it is to learn Playing Jeopardy with the class and inviting speakers into the classroom Poizner motivated his students by expanding their horizon. It was an intereting read about how Steve Poizner taught a semester of American Government without a teaching credential Personally I don t think teaching credentials are worth their weight the way they stand now It doesn t even come close to measuring the ability a person has to teach But after reading this book it made me painfully aware that education in California has not improved since I was a student back in the 70 s and 80 s Steve Poizner is promoting charter schools which might not be the solution for all But having been involved with 2 charter schools I can see how it can be a good idea for some students The solutions he offered on pages 235 239 would be great if implemented But it would take a miracle to cut through all the red beauracratic tape that exists todayBut after reading The Law by Frederic Bastiat our CA Education Code is the perfect example of how having laws actually limit the freedom of indviduals And that is exactly what has happened in our system Too many laws euals inefficiency and wasteOh yes and I don t agree with many of the ways he used to teach in his classroom But the power point project and writing assignments were excellent in challenging his students
