Need help with your riding crop techniue Wonder how to wrap your husband like a mummy Or maybe you caught your girlfriend wistfully eyeing a pair of handcuffs in a shop window and simply want to know how to bring up the subject with her Sensuous Magic has the answers Writer therapist and sex radical Patrick C Dear Patrick CalifiaMarry me Okay not really At least not until bigamy is legal But in seriousness I am pretty sure this is the best beginner SM book I ve ever read and anyone who is even THINKING about getting kinky with it should definitely give it a shot There are many good BDSM books marketed towards beginners but I find they all have flaws either not enough information or a scope that s so excessive as to be terrifying to a rank novice I ve read novice BDSM books that included extensive writings on roleplaying centered around rape racism and hate crimes and while that stuff is very interesting and useful for folks who want to go there putting it in a beginner book is a great way to freak the hell out of people who are still getting used to the idea of deliberate power exchange in the first place I could go on forever But the awesome thing about Sensuous Magic is that it doesn t baby talk to you but it also speaks directly to those of us who came to BDSM having absolutely no clue what we re doing For example the zillions of us who began to fool around with kink stuff because our partners asked us to We can t just act out the scene we ve been wanking to since we were 15 because that s not something that exists for us In fact having read a lot of his essays and such in the past the fact that this is sort of not marketed as a BDSM book you ll notice there s no explicit reference to SM or kink anywhere in the title so it doesn t come up if you re doing a search on say is utterly hilarious to me The other thing I ve always loved about Califia is that he takes a pragmatic approach to all this For example the idea that not everyone needs a safeword in the traditional sense because no stop works just fine for most people is something I ve long argued in favor of I ve also found myself to agree strongly with him on the idea that not everything needs to be negotiated to death I feel like he understands how actual real people do BDSM and thus the information he provides are things you ll actually use The blending of short storiesnarrative scenes with the informational segments is brilliant and possibly my favorite thing about it There s a great variety of scenes roles genders etc and it s great inspiration for those of us who suck at coming up with scenes on our own basically read this book You ll like it I promise

Alifia Rice has updated his classic introduction to SM and power play to embrace couples of all persuasions and at every stage of experience Although not a comprehensive technical guide you will need a book on rope bondage for instance if you want to learn appropriate knots and techniues Califia Rice's text o A very practical no funnystuff guide aimed primarily at hetero couples interested in first time SM explorationI can t say that it was instructional for me except for the caution against whipping someone along the spinethat really sunk in but Patrick s style is so enjoyable that I will read almost anything with interest

A well constructed introduction to BDSM that may be too much for the true novice I know I certainly got nervous whenever the subject of blood was brought up Nonetheless the author makes a strong attempt to uell fearsAn esp

A decent summary of BDSM culture and practices by Pat Califia the author was female identified when my edition was published in the late 90s though they are now male identified and go by Patrick Oddly hetero oriented given who the author is though certainly other sexualities are addressed as well Very safety first for which I give it an A Sho

Out of all the BDSM stuff out there I really only ever recommend two books to relative newcomers This is the one I loan out for people who need information than basic physical stuff who want to know about the why of BDSM and how it works in a larger context I can't imagine a better introduction to the field
