Bettering Myself

Short story from the April 2013 Paris ReviewMy classroom was on the first floor next. Oh okay there were a few fine times One day I went to the park and watched a suirrel run up a tree A cloud flew around in the sky I sat down on a patch of dry yellow grass and let the sun warm my back I may have even tried to do a crossword puzzle Once I found a twenty dollar bill in a pair of old jeans I drank a glass of water It got to be summer The days got intolerably long School let out The boyfriend graduated and moved back to Tennessee I bought an air conditioner and paid a kid to carry it down the street and up the stairs to my apartment

Dusted the toilet seat with talcum powder Another nun plugged the sink and filled it. Shorts stories are a mixed bag for me so even though this felt pretty wandering I really enjoyed the prose and overall attitude of our character throughout Looking forward to reading from this authorSide Note I bought this and then realized the published short story collection Ottessa has starts with this story Woops

I mean there has to be some beginning some ending Not such disappointment though I think I'll read one of her novels to understand whatever she's trying to say
