One of the best debuts I've read Highly recommended” Stav Sherez Author of A Dark Redemption “Lifts the curtain on the dark reality of summer season shows Characters recognisable but stripped of cheap sentiment A great read” Tony Peers veteran comedian actor and producer “Fantastic Gripping Nostalgic Brought back memories I was there” Kevin McFarlane Technical Stage Manager Lyceum Theatre Crew. Set in the backstage world of the seaside summer season shows this novel kept me gripped from the first chapter and I finished it the same day The cast of characters are well drawn with a sympathetic central character and a very repellent top of the bill It is a gritty story with some shocking scenes but the pace is good and I d like to read a seuel as I d love to know if some characters get their comeuppance and where Martin the protagonist ends up I d also like to know about mum Lorraine An excellent debut

The End of the Pier

Martin Collier is a stagehand on “Seaside Spectacular” where he falls for an unattainable dancer and where he suspects that Gerry Neon the star of the show may be his father Only his mother knows for sure Set in the summer of 1985 in the northern coastal town of Grumby The End of the Pier explores the Great British seaside resort and the much loved Variety show There is sea air and sand castles comed. OK this is my hubby s book BUT it s better than I thought it would be Obviously he was thinking of the plot when he should have been putting out the rubbish because this is a page turner even though I m sure he d told me what was going to happen glad I didn t listen I found myself really caring about Martin and Mandy and hoping that Gerry gets what he deserves I m now reading this for a third time in its finished form and I m still rooting for the characters Personally my favourite scenes are the bowling alley and football match Some parts are laugh out loud funny and other parts stay with you emotionally I great read perfect for a sun lounger or a deck chair at the British seaside

Ians and jugglers; but this is no postcard from the good old days as sex and violence are never far away and when Martin learns something about his mother a secret a lie he is compelled to search into her dark past and to confront his own painful history “Striking compelling A sharply observed evocation of a dying world The writing is superb the characters unforgettable and the ending incredibly moving. So yes I am going to review my own novel well sort of The decade I spent writing The End of the Pier involved to uote Einstein 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration Frankly writing it was an inconvenient toil But it was something that I had to do And the rare moments of inspiration when the plot came together or when a particularly pleasing form of words appeared on my screen or when one of my characters told me something those moments were wonderful and made all the countless other hours of research and false starts and cul de sacs worthwhile And am I happy with the end result Well as I wasn t writing to a deadline I could publish only when it was finished to a standard I was satisfied with so honestly it is a pretty much perfect realization of my artistic and emotional vision which is a flash way of saying I wanted to capture the feeling I had standing backstage in a Variety show watching the Weeds or the musicians or the ASM working the corner And I believe I have captured that so yes I am happy with it My characters all of whom I have come to know intimately and like even Gerry are of course fictitious and so are most of the events that occur in my story but as my reviewers blurbers can attest they are authentic in feel again this was something I wanted to achieve and I am pleased to have done so accurately Warts and all to uote my Dad Of course this book is no longer my own any It now belongs to the readers of which there are at least 7 and I truly hope they and other future readers enjoy it It might be dark in places but I wrote it with a genuine fondness for the Great British seaside and Variety Shows I had a privileged childhood meeting the people I did and watching the shows I did and it is a continuing privilege to now share it with you the reader Please let me know what you think You might like it you might not but trust me this is how it was After all there is truth in fiction Enjoy JCL

I enjoyed this novel and whilst it took a couple of chapters to hook me there were certain points when I couldn’t put it down The characters and story line were all very real and anyone who has been involved in any way with the world of variety entertainment or live shows will immediately identify with it The main character was Martin a stagehand and although I enjoyed his character and the twists in the plot involving him I f

James's book is a compelling read and gets better and better as you turn each page It captures the backstage world of the Seaside Spectaculars of the 1980s brilliantly and I loved all the 1980s' references Russ Abbott Cannon and Ball etc The characters are strong and I couldn't help but root for the excellent Mandy Monroe as well as the main character Martin James you will have to write a seuel to let us kno
