Anne Argula ä 4 review

Uinn a sharp tongued private investigator in Seattle who’s been busy waving goodbye to her philandering husband while fanning her hot flashes with her other hand has just bumped into a case that threatens to expose the compassionate heart beneath her hard boiled exteriorA fifteen year old named Danny has suffered hideous abuse at the hands of his twisted parents. The mystery is set in Seattle I enjoyed the local references being pretty familiar with the city and having been stuck in Ellensburg far too long although the traffic is too heavy to allow the free movement of the protagonist especially on Denny Way The title s similarity to Beckett s Krapp s Last Tape was so confusing that it delayed my reading for some time The plot twists although they did capture the Satanist paranoia of Eastern Washington got to be too much and the ending left me hanging when I really needed some closure

Ind and vindicate Danny before he diesuinn is not only moved by the tale but a little attracted to Krapp himself And yet something seems strange Why does the story have so many similarities to her high profile murder case and why has Krapp hired her While uinn gets in touch with her feminine side her suspicions force her to keep one hand on her Smith Wesson LadySmi. I love these mysteries featuring uinn In the first book she s still a cop in a small town in rural Washington In this one she s been a private investigator in Seattle for a while Some of the appeal for me is the location some is that the character is an older woman but a lot is just that they re well written Suspense crackling dialogue and uirky characters

This is Argula s third go round with her scrappy Seattle PI heroine uinn I wrote about her second book Walla Walla Suite in 2008 uinn is still grappling with her hot flashes as she gets a call from a Hollywood screenwriter Alex Krapp who invites her down for a meeting He s writing a screenplay for HBO about a Seattle boy that he s come to know and love through lengthy phone conversations The boy has written a book about his experiences growing up with horrendous abuse from his parents who are Satanists and to top it off he s dying of AIDS HBO is getting nervous about the authenticity of the story and wants proof that the boy exists The catch is that the boy s adoptive mother says that no one can see the boy because he is so ill uinn is hired to get the proofAs I started reading this book I was immediately reminded of Armistead Maupin s The Night Listener a novel about a radio personality who forms a close bond with a fan that he talks to on the radio and on the phone a boy who has suffered horrible abuse and is very ill I was intrigued to see where Argula was going to go with it Is the boy real or notAs with Argula s earlier books I was taken by the singular character of uinn and the evocation of the city of Seattle ArdisFrom ICPL Staff Picks Blog

This is the third in the series but I didn't feel as though I was missing anything by jumping in at this point uinn the menopausal PI has a distinctive humorous perspective that detracted from the story for me There was freuent reference to satanists although that aspect of the story stayed so much in the background that it didn't seem real
